About Riel Street

An independent reference to payments, banking and fintech regulation in Southeast Asia, written in Phnom Penh.

Why this site exists

The rules and systems behind everyday payments in Southeast Asia are public, but they are hard to find. They sit in central bank PDFs, regulations published first in Khmer, Thai or Vietnamese, and press releases scattered across many websites. English explanations are often out of date or wrong.

Riel Street turns those primary sources into clear, dated guides. We started with Cambodia, where we live and use these systems every day, and add one country at a time.

Why “Riel Street”

The riel (KHR) is Cambodia’s national currency. The name is a nod to Wall Street, the New York street that became shorthand for finance everywhere, seen from where we write: Phnom Penh.

It’s a statement of where we start, not a limit on what we cover. As we add Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia, we keep the same point of view: a Cambodian reading the official documents and explaining them plainly.

What we do

  • Explain how payment systems, banks, lenders and regulators work.
  • Compare countries side by side, with a source for every fact.
  • Keep trackers of fast-changing facts, such as cross-border QR links, and show when each was last checked.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t give financial, legal, tax or investment advice.
  • We don’t lend money, hold deposits, sell financial products or broker trades.
  • We don’t accept payment to change what an article says.

Who writes it

Riel Street is written and edited by TonBush V., a finance student at the National University of Management in Phnom Penh. Read how we choose and check sources in our editorial policy.
